About Injectables
Botox
Botox belongs to a category of cosmetic injectables known as neuromodulators. It’s made of a neurotoxin protein called botulinum toxin type A, which can block the transmission of signals from nerves to specific muscles. When injected underneath targeted facial tissues, Botox temporarily paralyzes the facial muscles responsible for your dynamic wrinkles, such as forehead lines, frown lines, and crow’s feet. As such, Botox suppresses unwanted expression lines, making you look younger. The results start appearing in 3 to 4 days, with continued improvements for up to 2 weeks.
Quick Facts
- Treats: Forehead lines, frown lines, crow’s feet, and other expression lines
- Onset: Final results within 2 weeks
- Longevity: 3 to 4 months
Dysport
Dysport is another highly effective neuromodulator, just like Botox. Dysport is FDA-approved to correct moderate to severe glabellar lines or frown lines, i.e., vertical lines between the eyebrows. It consists of the active ingredient botulinum toxin type A — when injected into the regions around the eyebrows, it freezes the muscles responsible for your frown lines. This makes your face seem more pleasant, whereas previously, you may have seemed eternally grumpy. Botox and Dysport are extremely similar, but your cosmetic provider will have their reasons to choose one over the other.

- Longevity: 3 to 4 months
Juvederm XC
Juvéderm XC is a hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler used to correct moderate to severe wrinkles and creases, such as nasolabial folds around the nose and marionette lines around the mouth. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring sugar that makes your skin look voluminous, supple, and youthful. It binds up to 1,000x its own weight in water, making your skin look hydrated and supple. Juvéderm XC contains a synthetic version of HA, which, when injected into facial tissues, fills out the fine lines, wrinkles, and facial creases, such as the nasolabial folds.
Quick Facts
- Treats: Moderate to severe facial wrinkles and creases, such as the parentheses lines
- Onset: Immediate
- Longevity: Up to 12 months
Restylane
Restylane is the world’s most popular collection of hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers. As mentioned previously, hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring gel that makes your skin look hydrated, supple, and youthful. The Restylane line consists of numerous products, each made with different HA consistencies and properties. Depending on your specific goals, you may receive Restylane fillers for cheek augmentation, chin augmentation, lip augmentation, or to soften fine lines, wrinkles, and facial creases, such as nasolabial folds. The cosmetic provider will recommend the ideal Restylane fillers for your specific needs.
Quick Facts
- Treats: Fine lines, wrinkles, facial creases, loss of midface volume, thin lips, recessed chin
- Onset: Immediate
- Longevity: 6 to 18 months, depending on the filler and treatment area
Kybella
Kybella is the world’s first non-surgical injectable treatment for a double chin, officially known as submental fullness. You may have excess fat deposits under your chin because of numerous factors, such as genetic predisposition or hormones. Kybella is an injectable composed of deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring substance that activates your body’s ability to dissolve and metabolize subcutaneous fat tissues. When injected under the chin, Kybella makes your body destroy the fat cells and flush them into the lymphatic system, following which they’re expelled from the body. It gives you a chiseled and contoured jawline.
Quick Facts
- Treats: Submental fullness, i.e., double chin
- Onset: One month, with gradual improvements over 4 to 6 sessions
- Longevity: Permanent
